Credit Management as a Pillar for the Healthcare Sector: An Interview with Paolo Colombari, CEO of Invenium Legaltech, by Best Italian Hospital

Credit management in healthcare is a central and strategic topic, as explained by Paolo Colombari, CEO of Invenium Legaltech, in an interview with Best Italian Hospital 2024. Colombari was joined by Paolo Meciani, founder of BIME Consulting, in emphasizing the significance of this topic within a complex landscape that includes the national healthcare system, private healthcare facilities, and large insurance entities. Effective credit management is crucial to ensure the sustainability and innovation of the healthcare sector, both nationally and internationally.

Healthcare and Insurance: A Strategic Partnership

The synergy between the insurance and healthcare sectors is taking on a pivotal role. Large insurance groups can contribute to the healthcare system’s sustainability through partnerships that involve complex credit management contracts and processes. The growing presence of private healthcare also requires hospitals to adopt a new approach, paying particular attention to payment times and outstanding debt. “Invenium Legaltech exports an innovative credit management model focused on the sector’s financial sustainability,” Colombari explained, highlighting that this approach is not limited to Italy but is also critical for pharmaceutical and healthcare companies operating abroad.

The Italian pharma sector generates over 50 billion euros annually, with 95% of its production exported—a significant impact not only on the national economy but also on international markets, where credit management becomes essential,” noted Colombari. He emphasized that proper payment management ensures the financial sustainability of healthcare institutions, reduces Days Sales Outstanding (DSO), and allows for continued innovation—an essential factor in maintaining Italian excellence.

A Guide for CFOs: Credit Management in Healthcare

Over the past year, Invenium Legaltech developed a guide to assist CFOs in the pharmaceutical and healthcare sectors, drawing on a credit management model developed in the banking sector in 2017. During the Best Italian Hospitals interview, Colombari explained that while banking and insurance sectors are legally required to implement specific credit management strategies, there is still significant progress to be made in Italian healthcare, though some hospital groups are heading in the right direction. Adopting solid corporate procedures to optimize average payment times (DSO) is essential for ensuring the sustainability of healthcare facilities.

Innovation and Finance: Invenium Legaltech’s Role in Silicon Valley

Colombari shared his recent experience as CEO of Invenium Legaltech, participating in an internationalization project in San Francisco hosted by Innovit, the Italian Export Accelerator in Silicon Valley and the United States, created by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. At this event, he explored the synergies among innovation, artificial intelligence, and finance, emphasizing how these fields are increasingly integrated to accelerate growth in healthcare enterprises. He described the experience as a valuable opportunity to transform Invenium Legaltech’s business vision and organizational model, where artificial intelligence will play an increasingly crucial role in supporting strategic decision-making.

Credit management in healthcare is not merely a financial issue but also an ethical responsibility. Effective credit management allows hospitals to maintain excellence in patient care, ensuring a strong financial foundation that fosters research and innovation. In this context, Invenium Legaltech’s role has become vital, bringing a strategic and sustainable approach that embraces the international dimension and envisions the future of Italian healthcare as a sector where people-centered care and corporate sustainability go hand in hand with innovation.
